Michael Lowenstern, born on August 23, 1968 in Chicago, Illinois, is an American bass clarinetist and composer. He began playing the clarinet at age eight and later switched to the bass clarinet. Lowenstern studied under John Bruce Yeh of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and graduated from the Interlochen Arts Academy in 1985. His career began with performances alongside notable ensembles such as Steve Reich and Musicians, Saxophonist John Zorn, The Klezmatics, and The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. His first album, Spasm, was released by New World Records in 1996. In 2000, he joined the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra and released his second album, 1985. Lowenstern shifted his focus to solo compositions and performances in mid-2005, self-releasing several albums under Earspasm Music between 2003 and 2015. Notable releases include Ten Children (2003), Fade (2006), Spin Cycle (2010), and Sway (2014).
