Alexandrina Miltcheva was born on November 27, 1934, in Smyadovo, Kingdom of Bulgaria. The Bulgarian operatic mezzo-soprano made her debut at the State Opera of Varna as Dorabella in Mozart's Così fan tutte. Her breakthrough came when she won first prize at the Concours international de chant de Toulouse. Miltcheva joined the Sofia National Opera in 1968 and performed on major international stages, including the Opéra Garnier in Paris, La Scala of Milan, the Teatro di San Carlo of Naples, the Verona Arena, and the Bavarian State Opera. She sang roles by Verdi, Mozart, and Rossini, as well as lieder by Mahler and other composers, and songs by Moussorgsky and Tchaikovsky, collaborating with conductors such as Sir Georg Solti, Herbert von Karajan, and Riccardo Muti. Miltcheva recorded many discs and founded her own school in 1994.
