James Pennington, known professionally as Suburban Knight, was born in 1965 in Detroit, Michigan. He is an American techno producer and DJ. In 1987, Pennington gained recognition with his debut release, "The Groove" on the Transmat label, owned by Derrick May. His techno classic "The Art of Stalking" was released on Transmat in 1990. In the early 1990s, Pennington became a mentor to Mike Banks of Underground Resistance, releasing singles like "Nocturbulous Behavior" and "Dark Energy" on UR. He also collaborated with Underground Resistance on their album Interstellar Fugitives. His debut full-length album, My Sol Dark Direction, was released in 2003 by Peacefrog Records. In September 2021, Detroit Techno Records announced the release of Suburban Knight's first EP on vinyl in over a decade.
