The Ying Quartet, an American string quartet, was formed in 1988 in Winnetka, Illinois by siblings Timothy and Janet Ying on violins, Phillip Ying on viola, and David Ying on cello while studying at the University of Rochester's Eastman School of Music. Their breakthrough came as part of the National Endowment for the Arts Chamber Music Rural Residencies Program in Jesup, Iowa. In 1993, the quartet won the Naumburg Chamber Music Award. The Ying Quartet has performed extensively across major American cities and internationally, including at Carnegie Hall and the White House. They have collaborated with various artists and recorded for labels such as Telarc, Quartz, Elektra, and Albany. Notable recordings include a Grammy-nominated album of Tchaikovsky quartets in 2007 and a Grammy-winning collaborative recording with the Turtle Island String Quartet entitled 4+Four in 2005.
