Stretch, a British blues-rock band formed in 1973, was founded by Dave Terry, known as Elmer Gantry. The group emerged from the remnants of Velvet Opera and Armada, two previous bands that featured key members like Kirby Gregory on guitar and Steve Emery on bass. Stretch's breakthrough came with their debut single "Why Did You Do It?", released in 1975, which peaked at Number 16 on the UK Singles Chart and spent eight weeks on the chart. The band's first album, Elastique, followed later that year. Despite initial success, subsequent releases did not match the impact of their debut single. In September 1976, Stretch supported Ritchie Blackmore’s Rainbow during their England tour. They released three more albums—You Can't Beat Your Brain for Entertainment, Life Blood, and Forget the Past—but disbanded in 1977. Following the band's dissolution, Elmer Gantry contributed vocals to several notable projects, including Alan Parsons Project's "May Be A Price To Pay" from The Turn of a Friendly Card (1980) and Jon Lord’s Before I Forget (1982). The single "Why Did You Do It?" saw renewed popularity in the 1980s, reaching Number Three in Austria and Number Twenty in Switzerland. In 1995, the band reformed briefly for a performance with Jeff Healey Band and released Unfinished Business in 2011, featuring updated versions of their hits along with cover songs. The single "Why Did You Do It?" became the title track to the television series Wilsberg.
