Arnold, an English alternative rock trio from London formed in 1996, consisted of Phil Morris on lead vocals and drums, Mark Saxby on guitar and vocals, and Phil Payne on bass and vocals. The group emerged from the earlier band Patio after a lineup change, adopting the name Arnold after Payne’s dog. Their debut single "Twist" was released in 1997, followed by the EP Fishsounds the same year, establishing their presence on Creation Records. In 1997 the band issued their first full-length album, The Barn Tapes, recorded initially as barn demos in Kent, and in 1998 released Hillside, which received critical acclaim; the single "Windsor Park" was issued in September 1998. Arnold toured the United States in 1998, returned to the UK to support Neil Finn and Bernard Butler, and remained with Creation until the label’s closure in 1999. The band then signed to Alan McGee’s Poptones, added Rob Arriss and Dave Hill, and issued Bahama in 2001, featuring "Tiny Car" which appeared on the soundtrack of the film When Brendan Met Trudy. After Bahama, Saxby and Payne formed the side project Little Massive, releasing Dog Gone in 2005, while Arnold’s catalogue was reissued in 2008 with bonus tracks. The group has not released new material since the early 2000s, and their legacy persists through reissues and continued influence on the UK alternative scene.
