Valerie Dore nació el 28 de mayo de 1963 en Milán. Es una cantante italiana asociada al género italo-disco y considerada una de las voces más destacadas de la escena dance europea de los años 80. Detrás del nombre artístico se esconde la música Monica Stucchi. Desde principios de la década de 1980, colabora con productores de la escena disco y synthpop italiana y desarrolla un proyecto que apuesta fuertemente por los sonidos atmosféricos de los sintetizadores y las estructuras narrativas del pop. En 1984 sale a la luz su tema más conocido internacionalmente, el sencillo «The Night». La canción suena en la radio de varios países europeos y marca de forma duradera su perfil público. En ese mismo periodo, Valerie Dore publica otros sencillos como «Get Closer» y «It’s So Easy». En 1984 le sigue el álbum The Legend, que se sitúa estilísticamente entre el italo disco y el pop melódico. En 1986 sale a la luz el álbum Lancelot, que continúa con el lenguaje visual de inspiración medieval de su proyecto y pone mayor énfasis en los elementos narrativos.
