Lyres, una banda de garage rock de Boston, se formó en 1979 tras la disolución de DMZ. La formación original incluía a Jeff Conolly al órgano y la voz, Rick Coraccio al bajo, Ricky Carmel a la guitarra y Paul Murphy a la batería. Su single, "How Do You Know?" b/w "Don't Give It Up Now" fue lanzado en 1979. Lyres llamó la atención con su LP de debut On Fyre en 1984, con el tema "Help You Ann", que ocupó el número 24 en la encuesta anual de críticos Pazz & Jop de The Village Voice en 1983 y que más tarde fue versionado por Courtney Love. El grupo publicó varios álbumes, entre ellos Lyres Lyres en 1986 y Live At Cantones en 1987. A lo largo de su carrera, Lyres colaboró con músicos notables como Stiv Bators, de los Dead Boys.
