Lounès Matoub, nacido Lwennas Meɛṭub el 24 de enero de 1956 en Taourirt Moussa, Cabilia (Argelia), fue un cantante y mandole argelino. Criado por su madre y su abuela, Matoub construyó su primera guitarra a los nueve años y empezó a componer canciones siendo adolescente. Comenzó su carrera musical bajo el patrocinio de Idir, publicando su álbum debut Ay Izem en 1978. A lo largo de su carrera, Matoub publicó más de 36 álbumes, entre los que destacan obras como Tadukli (1985), Rwah Rwah (1988) y Kenza (1994). Su música mezclaba la orquestación andaluza argelina chaabi con letras cabilas politizadas, que abordaban temas como la causa bereber, la democracia y los derechos humanos. A pesar de su prohibición en la radio y la televisión argelinas, Matoub siguió siendo influyente. Recibió varios premios, entre ellos Le Prix de la Mémoire en 1994 y Le Prix Tahar Djaout en 1995. El 25 de junio de 1998, Lounès Matoub fue asesinado por pistoleros enmascarados mientras conducía en Cabilia. Su muerte provocó violentos disturbios y un duelo generalizado.
