The Headhunters fue una banda de jazz fusión formada por el icónico teclista de jazz Herbie Hancock (nacido el 12 de abril de 1940). Cada vez más interesado en los teclados electrónicos y la música funk, Hancock ya había disuelto su banda Mwandishi antes de formar The Headhunters. La formación original estaba compuesta por Herbie Hancock (teclados), Harvey Mason (batería), Bill Summers (percusión), Paul Jackson (bajo) y Bennie Maupin (saxofón/clarinete). El primer álbum de la banda, Head Hunters (1973), se publicó bajo el nombre de Herbie Hancock. Aunque el álbum no escaló en las listas de éxitos, se vendió muy bien y ahora se considera uno de los álbumes que definen el jazz fusión. Harvey Mason abandonó el grupo y fue sustituido por el batería Mike Clark cuando la banda publicó el álbum Thrust (1974), de nuevo bajo el nombre de Herbie Hancock. El primer álbum de la banda bajo su propio nombre fue Survival of the Fittest (1977), su primer álbum en el que no aparecía Herbie Hancock como miembro activo (aunque seguía acreditado como productor). El álbum introdujo al guitarrista DeWayne Blackbyrd McKnight en la formación. El álbum alcanzó el número 12 en la lista de álbumes de jazz tradicional de Billboard. En 1977, publicaron el álbum Straight from the Gate, que introdujo otro cambio en la formación. Sin embargo, la banda se separó poco después. En 1998, los miembros de la banda se reunieron con Herbie Hancock para el álbum Return of the Headhunters, que alcanzó el número 9 en la lista Contemporary Jazz Albums. Diferentes encarnaciones de The Headhunters -con varios miembros originales- publicaron los álbumes Evolution Revolution (2003), Platinum (2011) y Speakers in the House (2018). El bajista Paul Jackson falleció el 18 de marzo de 2021.
