Descrito por Julian Lloyd Webber como "probablemente el mejor violonchelista de todos los tiempos", Mstislav Rostropóvich fue célebre en todo el mundo. Se le atribuye el mérito de haber ampliado la popularidad del violonchelo al tiempo que expandía su gama, y también dejó una huella significativa como director de orquesta.

Nacido en el seno de una familia de músicos de Azerbaiyán (su padre también era un conocido violonchelista y su madre una respetada soprano), tocaba el piano y el violonchelo y estudió en el Conservatorio de Moscú, donde más tarde fue profesor de violonchelo. Dio su primer concierto de violonchelo en 1942, y pronto fue reconocido como un maestro innovador del instrumento. Sergei Prokofiev y Dmitri Shostakovich, entre otros destacados compositores, escribieron conciertos específicamente para él. Defensor de los derechos humanos durante toda su vida, apoyó al escritor soviético disidente Alexandr Soltzhenitsyn y, en conflicto constante con las autoridades soviéticas, se fue a vivir a Estados Unidos, donde se le retiró la nacionalidad soviética (recuperada en 1994). En América fue director de la Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional de Washington entre 1977 y 1994 y recibió la Medalla Presidencial de la Libertad.

El día en que Rusia invadió Checoslovaquia en 1968, actuó en los Proms de Londres con la Orquesta Sinfónica Estatal Soviética, interpretando el Concierto para violonchelo en si menor de Dvorak, agitando la partitura del director sobre su cabeza al final como gesto de solidaridad con los checos. En 1989 dio un concierto improvisado en Berlín con motivo de la caída del Muro y fue recibido en Rusia, donde entabló amistad con Boris Yeltsin. También actuó regularmente con su esposa, la cantante de ópera Galina Vishnevskaya, así como con su hija pianista Elena, y la amplitud de su obra fue aclamada en todo el mundo y se dice que estrenó 117 nuevas composiciones. Vivía en París y murió de cáncer en 2007.
