The Persuaders, un grupo vocal de R&B de Nueva York, se formó en 1969. Los miembros originales -Douglas "Smokey" Scott, Willie Holland, James Barnes y Charles Stodghill- habían cantado previamente con varios grupos locales antes de unirse para crear su sonido distintivo, caracterizado por una estrecha armonía y emotivas voces principales. Su gran éxito llegó en 1971, cuando firmaron con Atlantic Records y lanzaron "Thin Line Between Love & Hate", que encabezó la lista Billboard R&B y alcanzó el número 15 en la lista Pop. La canción fue certificada como disco de oro por la Recording Industry Association of America el 29 de octubre de 1971. Tras este éxito, en 1973 publicaron su álbum debut The Persuaders, que incluía éxitos como "Love's Gonna Pack Up (and Walk Out)". A finales de ese mismo año, la tragedia se cebó con la muerte de Stodghill y la marcha de Barnes, lo que provocó cambios en la formación. El grupo siguió publicando álbumes, como Best Thing That Ever Happened to Me en 1974, que incluía su versión original de "Some Guys Have All the Luck".
