Kim Lorraine Appleby nació el 28 de agosto de 1961 en Stoke Newington (Inglaterra), de padre jamaicano y madre británica. Tras una infancia difícil marcada por la dolorosa separación de sus padres, ella y su hermana Melanie fueron rápidamente descubiertas por el legendario equipo de producción Stock Aitken and Waterman, ya responsable del éxito de potros como Jason Donovan, Rick Astley y Kylie Minogue. Juntas cosecharon una serie de éxitos dance durante los años 80, pero la historia tuvo un trágico final cuando Melanie murió de cáncer en 1990. Kimberly emprendió entonces una carrera en solitario con el apoyo de su pareja, el ex bajista de los Bros Craig Logan. Dos años más tarde publicó un álbum homónimo, que cosechó un gran éxito gracias al tema "Don't Worry". El siguiente álbum, Breakaway, publicado en 1993, lamentablemente no estuvo a la altura de las expectativas, pero esto no impidió que Kim Appleby continuara su carrera, publicando numerosos singles.
