Suns of Arqa, colectivo de músicas del mundo fundado en 1979 por Michael Wadada, comenzó su andadura en la escena de la World Music con el álbum de debut Revenge Of The Mozabites (1980), producido por Adrian Sherwood. En 1982, actuaron en la edición inaugural del Festival WOMAD y colaboraron con Prince Far-I. A lo largo de la década de 1990, Suns of Arqa publicó álbumes como Land of a Thousand Churches (1991) y colaboró con artistas como 808 State, A Guy Called Gerald, John Leckie y Youth, entre otros. El grupo también ha actuado en grandes festivales como Glastonbury y Phoenix Festival.
