Blaze Foley sólo vivió 39 años, pero en ese tiempo se convirtió en una figura casi legendaria entre amigos y colegas. Nacido como Michael David Fuller el 18 de diciembre de 1949, creció cantando con sus parientes como The Singing Fuller Family, un grupo de gospel. En los años 70 se trasladó a una comuna y conoció a Sybil Rosen, que sería su musa y su esposa. Inspirado por su nuevo amor, comenzó una carrera musical en serio, y ambos se establecieron en Austin, donde se hizo muy amigo del cantautor tejano Towns Van Zandt. Tocaba en directo y seguía escribiendo canciones que mezclaban honestidad, humor y su propia sensibilidad estrafalaria, todo ello mientras vivía una vida peripatética. Una serie de desafortunados acontecimientos impidieron que se publicara ninguno de sus álbumes en vida. En 1987 Willie Nelson y Merle Haggard grabaron su canción "If I Could Only Fly" Murió el 1 de febrero de 1989, tiroteado por el hijo de un viejo amigo. Su leyenda creció tras su muerte con artistas como John Prine y Lyle Lovett grabando sus canciones. Se convirtió en el tema de canciones de su viejo amigo Van Zandt ("Blaze's Blues"), así como de Kings of Leon ("Reverend") y Lucinda Williams ("Drunken Angel"). Las memorias de Rosen sobre su tiempo con Foley fueron adaptadas en la película de 2018 Blaze, dirigida por Ethan Hawke.
