Dave Lee, un influyente pionero de la escena dance británica, dirigió sellos discográficos, hizo remezclas para estrellas del pop consagradas y creó una serie de grandes himnos de club que alcanzaron el reconocimiento general. Criado en el pequeño pueblo de Thorpe-le-Soken, en Essex, tras trasladarse desde la Isla de Wight, se enamoró por primera vez de la música cuando vio a grupos de glam rock y actuaciones de música disco en el programa de televisión de la BBC "Top of the Pops" a mediados de la década de 1970 y se convirtió en un coleccionista obsesivo, trabajando más tarde como distribuidor y experto en música dance para el emblemático sello independiente Rough Trade. Esto le llevó a dirigir Republic Records y a publicar sus propios temas de house conmovedor e influencias disco bajo distintos nombres, como M.D.Emm, Rawn Maize, Jakkatta y Doug Willis. Sin embargo, fue bajo el seudónimo de Joey Negro donde cosechó algunos de sus mayores éxitos, empezando por el primitivo hit house al estilo de Frankie Knuckles "Do It, Believe" en 1990, y los primeros temas "Above and Beyond" y "Enter Your Fantasy" llegaron a los 40 principales del Reino Unido. Trabajó con la hermana de Chaka Khan, Takka Boom, en el gran éxito dance favorito de EE.UU.
