El grupo de raíces americanas Hurray for the Riff Raff no era tanto una banda sólida como un colectivo disperso liderado por la cantante y compositora folk Alynda Segarra. Nacida en Nueva York, Segarra se trasladó a Nueva Orleans en 2007, donde empezó a utilizar el nombre de Hurray for the Riff Raff y publicó sus álbumes It Don't Mean I Don't Love You (No significa que no te quiera) en 2008 y Young Blood Blues (Blues de sangre joven ) en 2010. Seleccionó sus canciones favoritas de esos álbumes para su debut en el sello independiente británico Loose Records, Hurray for the Riff Raff, de 2011. look Out Mama, de 2012, siguió cosechando elogios de la crítica y el grupo actuó en el célebre Newport Folk Festival de 2013 antes de publicar My Dearest Darkest Hour ese mismo año.
