Wheat se formó en 1996 en Taunton, Massachusetts, por el vocalista y guitarrista Scott Levesque, el batería Brendan Harney, el guitarrista Ricky Brennan Jr. y el bajista Kenny Madaras. El grupo debutó con Medeiros (1997) en Sugar Free Records, mostrando las sensibilidades de rock alternativo de la banda y con la producción de Dave Auchenbach. En 1999 le siguió Hope and Adams, producido por Dave Fridmann, y el single "Don't I Hold You" alcanzó el número 50 en el BBC Radio 1 Festive Fifty de John Peel. Tras fichar por Aware Records, Wheat publicó Per Second, Per Second, Per Second... Every Second en 2003. La banda salió de gira con Liz Phair y Toad the Wet Sprocket y apareció en el programa Late Night with Conan O'Brien. En 2007, Scott Levesque y Ricky Brennan Jr. publicaron Everyday I Said a Prayer for Kathy and Made a One Inch Square a través de Empyrean Records, seguido de White Ink, Black Ink en 2009 bajo el sello Rebel Group. Los lanzamientos posteriores incluyeron el EP Move = Move y el proyecto de 2015 Wishing Good Things for the World. La actividad de Wheat decayó después de 2016, y el batería Brendan Harney falleció en febrero de 2025.
