Sticky Figure, que nació como banda unipersonal en 2006, se había convertido en uno de los grupos de reggae más vendidos de Estados Unidos en la década de 2010, encabezando la lista de éxitos de reggae de Estados Unidos con álbumes como Burial Ground, Set in Stone y Wisdom. Scott Woodruff formó el proyecto en su ciudad natal de Duxbury, Massachusetts. Inspirado por Keller Williams, empezó a crear una mezcla en capas de influencias roots-reggae y dub utilizando un looper digital, eliminando así la necesidad de compañeros de banda adicionales. Woodruff introdujo este sonido con el álbum de debut de Stick Figure, The Sound of My Addiction, en 2007. Burnin' Ocean le siguió en 2008, y Woodbury se trasladó a California antes de publicar su tercer álbum, Smoke Stack, en 2009.
