Pocas bandas han logrado un equilibrio tan perfecto entre heavy metal y metal progresivo como Symphony X. Tras un vacilante debut en 1994 con Symphony X, la banda del guitarrista Michael Romeo llamó la atención en 1997 con The Divine Wings of Tragedy. Los esfuerzos posteriores de la banda resultaron menos que estelares, a pesar del creciente éxito. En 2007, Paradise Lost consolidó finalmente a Symphony X tanto artística como comercialmente, sobre todo en Francia. Desde entonces, la banda estadounidense se ha consolidado como uno de los referentes del género con los álbumes Iconoclast (2011), sobre las nuevas tecnologías, y Underworld (2015), inspirado en la Divina Comedia de Dante.
