Liderado por el compositor y productor Michael Cleveland, Indeep fue un trío neoyorquino de new wave que arrasó en las listas de éxitos a principios de los 80 con su mezcla única de hip-hop, funk y disco. Desde su lanzamiento, su éxito característico "Last Night a D.J. Saved My Life" ha sido versionado y sampleado ampliamente por artistas como Mariah Carey, Madonna y Boards of Canada. Junto con las cantantes Réjane Magloire y Rose Marie Ramsey, Cleveland publicó el debut oficial de estudio de Indeep, Last Night a D.J. Saved My Life, en 1982. Poco después, la canción que da título al álbum se convirtió en un éxito mundial, alcanzando el número 10 en la lista Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs de Billboard y el Top 5 en países como Bélgica, Países Bajos y España.
