Louis XIV se formó en San Diego, California, en abril de 2003 por el vocalista y guitarrista Jason Hill, el guitarrista Brian Karscig, el batería Mark Maigaard y el bajista James Armbrust. Su debut homónimo, grabado en un sótano de París y publicado por Pineapple Recording Group el 14 de noviembre de 2003, vendió más de 22 000 copias en seis meses. A principios de 2004, la banda publicó el EP Illegal Tender y se dio a conocer tras sus apariciones en Jonathan Ross y BBC Radio 1, y recibió el apoyo de Brody Dalle y Josh Homme en los premios NME de 2004. El single "Finding Out True Love Is Blind" supuso un contrato con Atlantic Records a finales de 2004. La banda publicó The Distances From Everyone To You EP (11 de septiembre de 2007) y Slick Dogs And Ponies (28 de enero de 2008). Se disolvieron en julio de 2009 tras la marcha de Brian Karscig, se reunieron brevemente en 2012 y volvieron a separarse en 2013.
