Formada en Charlottesville (Virginia) en 1991, la Dave Matthews Band estaba integrada por el líder, cantante y guitarrista del grupo, Stefan Lessard (bajo), Boyd Tinsley (violín), Carter Beauford (bajo) y LeRoi Moore (saxofón). Nacido en Johannesburgo (Sudáfrica) en 1967, Dave Matthews trabajó como camarero en Charlottesville y se sumergió en la música rock, funk, jazz y blues, lo que le llevó a formar su propia banda. Publicado en su propio sello, Bama Rags Records, el álbum de debut Remember Two Things (1993) fue seguido de una guerra de ofertas de compañías discográficas ganada por RCA, que publicó Under the Table and Dreaming (1994), que alcanzó el nº 11 en el Billboard 200. Desde entonces, Dave Matthews Band se ha mantenido en lo más alto de las listas de álbumes con los siguientes discos: Crash (nº 2 en 1996), Before These Crowed Streets (nº 1 en 1998), Everyday (nº 1 en 2001), Busted Stuff (nº 1 en 2002), Some Devil (nº 2 en 2003) y Stand Up (nº 1 en 2005). La muerte de LeRoi Moore en agosto de 2008 afectó a la banda, que al año siguiente publicó el álbum Big Whiskey & the GrooGrux King (nº 1), con el guitarrista Tim Reynolds y un nuevo saxofonista, Jeff Coffin.
