El grupo punk Goldfinger se formó en Los Ángeles, California, en 1994. Fundado por el vocalista y guitarrista John Feldmann, el batería Darrin Pfeiffer, el bajista Simon Williams y el guitarrista principal Charlie Paulson, sus miembros conectaron por primera vez mientras trabajaban: Feldmann y Williams se conocieron en una zapatería, donde una maqueta les puso en contacto con el equipo de A&R que les ayudaría a lanzar su carrera. Goldfinger no tardó en consolidarse gracias a sus frenéticas actuaciones en directo, sus estribillos himnóticos y su atractiva mezcla de energía punk y ritmos ska. Goldfinger formaron parte originalmente del renacimiento del ska-punk y fueron uno de los líderes de la escena con el lanzamiento del EP Richter (1995) y el álbum debut en grandes sellos Goldfinger (1996). Con singles como "Here in Your Bedroom", el disco se convirtió en piedra angular del movimiento ska de la tercera ola y obtuvo un reconocimiento duradero. Sus dos siguientes álbumes, Hang-Ups (1997) y Stomping Ground (2000), continuaron en la línea del ska-punk, pero cuando Goldfinger publicó el álbum Open Your Eyes en 2002, habían virado hacia un sonido pop-punk más pulido.
