El joven novelista y músico, cantante y guitarrista Mikel Jollett formó la banda The Airborne Toxic Event en Los Ángeles en 2006 con Steven Chen (guitarra, teclados), Noah Harmon (bajo), Anna Bulbrook (teclados, viola) y Daren Taylor (batería). Combinando las bases del post-punk de los 80 con elementos electrónicos y clásicos, la banda, que toma su nombre de un pasaje de la novela White Noise de Don DeLillo, grabó por primera vez el tema "Does This Mean You're Moving On?" y un EP autotitulado en 2007, antes de firmar con el sello independiente Majordomo Records. Destacados por la crítica desde el primer álbum que lleva su nombre, The Airbone Toxic Event colocó el título "Sometime Around Midnight" en las listas Billboard Modern Rock y luego trabajaron en el álbum All at Once, publicado en 2011. En 2013, su sucesor Such Hot Blood se situó en el puesto 27 del Billboard 200, convirtiendo al grupo en uno de los más destacados de la escena del rock alternativo estadounidense. Al año siguiente, el bajista Adrian Rodríguez sustituyó a Noah Harmon y participó en las sesiones del álbum de electropop y rock Dope Machines (2015), seguido inmediatamente por Songs of God and Whiskey, disponible únicamente en la página web del grupo. Tras la marcha de Anna Bulbrook en 2019, siguió el álbum Hollywood Park y la llegada de la violinista Mimi Peschet para el siguiente, Glory (2024), que renovó el entramado musical del grupo.
