Kenneth Charles "Jethro" Burns nació el 10 de marzo de 1920 en Conasauga, Tennessee. De niño se trasladó a Knoxville y conoció a Henry D. Haynes, formando el dúo Homer y Jethro. Tras servir en la Segunda Guerra Mundial, firmaron con King Records y más tarde con RCA Records. El dúo ganó un Grammy por "The Battle of Kookamonga" en 1959. Burns introdujo las armonías de jazz en la música country y continuó su carrera tras la muerte de Haynes, colaborando con Steve Goodman. Murió de cáncer el 4 de febrero de 1989 en Evanston, Illinois. En 2001, Homer y Jethro ingresaron en el Salón de la Fama de la Música Country.
