Ferry Corsten y Tiësto se conocieron a mediados de la década de 1990 en una tienda de discos de Rotterdam, y se hicieron amigos cuando pasaron de ser DJs a convertirse en productores de éxito. Corsten empezó a triunfar bajo diferentes nombres, como Moonman, Ferr y, sobre todo, System F; mientras que Tiësto se labró una reputación en los clubes locales y fundó su propio sello, Black Hole Recordings.

Cuando empezaron a trabajar juntos en 1998, fue un tema al que llamaron "Gouryella" (palabra aborigen que significa "Cielo") el que destacó y se convirtió tanto en el nombre de su grupo como en su primer sencillo. Uno de sus primeros defensores fue Paul Oakenfold, que recibió una enorme reacción del público cuando empezó a tocar el tema en la legendaria discoteca británica Cream y, en 1999, el single ya había entrado en la cultura general y había alcanzado el número 15 en las listas del Reino Unido. Los siguientes temas, "Walhalla" y "Tenshi", también obtuvieron buenos resultados y se convirtieron en la estrella de Ibiza, ya que sus picos eufóricos, sus ritmos palpitantes e hipnóticos y sus melodías memorables al instante se convirtieron en el epítome de la moda trance de la época.

Tiësto se marchó en 2001 en busca del estrellato en solitario, pero sus temas se incluyeron en varios álbumes recopilatorios y Corsten continuó con el edificante himno de club "Ligaya". Aunque las tendencias de la música de baile cambiaron y Corsten pasó a establecerse como un aclamado DJ/productor internacional, volvió a sus raíces trance en 2015 y retomó el nombre de Gouryella con el brillante banger retro "Anahera" en 2015. También dio lugar al álbum "From the Heavens" y Corsten ofreció una nostálgica reimaginación de la cultura dance de los años 90 con el contundente oleaje de los singles "Neba" y "Venera (Vee's Theme)".
