Inspired by his elementary school music teacher, an ethnomusicologist, Ian started to play video game music by leaving Final Fantasy VI running in the background and playing along to the game on the piano. He has since learned several other instruments over the years including bass, bodhrán, Irish bouzouki, Irish tenor banjo, smallpipes, and concertina. He discovered the VGM community in 2015 and has been recording and performing with a number of VGM-related bands and projects such as Darby & Ian, The Travelers VGM, Life Stream, Free the Green Beans, Man on the Internet, BONEHENGE, Gygax, and AstroTuna. He is also a regular contributor at Dwelling of Duels. Over the past two years, he has performed as a solo act as a part of shows put on by Bonus Stage, Washington Metropolitan Gamer Symphony Orchestra, Lauren the Flute, Ongaku Overdrive, and BAR Con.
In addition to VGM, Ian has spent a large part of his life studying Irish and Scottish traditional music as well as English folksong. He has been a session singer for a number of recordings for movie and television soundtracks. He is also a club DJ, having appeared in many clubs across the USA. He has also studied the gamelan music of Cirebon, Indonesia. He received his M.A. in Ethnomusicology from UC Davis in 2013.
