Martyn Bennett-Knight was a Canadian-Scottish musician and composer born on February 17, 1971, in St. John's. He began playing the bagpipe at age twelve and later studied violin and piano at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. In 1994, he supported the project Mouth Music. His eponymous debut album, Martyn Bennett, appeared in 1996, followed by Bothy Culture in 1998, which reached the top of the US college radio charts. He received the 1998 Glenfiddich Spirit of Scotland Award. His later discography included the studio recordings Hardland (2000), Glen Lyon (2002), and Grit (2003). Bennett was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma in 2000. He died from cancer on January 30, 2005, in Edinburgh. Posthumous releases included the EP Mackay's Memoirs (2005) and the compilation Aye (2012).
