I’m Rona Mac (she/her). I write songs that feel real to me, in hope that they’ll feel real to other people. I am hard-core independent, from songwriting to booking, mixing to publishing. I am all graft, all grit, all grin. I work from an old tourer caravan with some foam stuck on the walls on the most westerly tip of mainland Wales, where I record, perform and produce over the winter months (between storms). My music is mostly alt-folk, but occasionally meanders to alt-pop and indie. The songs are sentimental, lyrically driven and use guitar and vocals with equal weight and intention. I write about universal human experiences, through the lens of my own. Comparisons have been drawn with Adrienne Lenker, Phoebe Bridgers, Joni Mitchell, Ben Howard and Billie Marten. On stage, I use loop pedals, synths, beat box and effects, minimalistically.
Time for the plugging. I’ll keep it to the point to save us all the discomfort (especially me).
I have played support for acclaimed acts such as Willy Mason, Billie Marten, and Katy J Pearson. After my most recent album release, I toured the UK and Europe squeezing 20 gigs into 30 days, which I booked myself - something I am pretty proud of, logistically speaking. I have had A-list features on Radio Wales and plays on BBC Radio 1 and 6, as well as articles in the likes of Clash and Wonderland Magazine. I am super grateful for the funding opportunities I've been blessed with, from PRS Woman Make Music, Help musicians and more. Without their support, I wouldn’t be where I am currently.
My main hobbies include surfing, walking my very high maintenance dog, and writing music. Oh, and I’m a lesbian cliche.
Genuine thanks for reading all the way through. X
