Ammonia was an Australian metal music band formed in Perth in 1992 by guitarist Dave Johnstone, drummer Alan Balmont, and bassist Simon Hensworth. The group initially performed under the name Fuzzswirl before changing to Ammonia in 1993. Ammonia's early success came from self-financed recordings and live performances, gaining traction through tours of Melbourne and Sydney. In 1994, they signed with Sony's Murmur label after a successful live recording for Triple J, which included the track "Orange Juice". Their debut EP In a Box was released in 1994, followed by Sleepwalking in early 1995. The band's first album, Mint 400, produced by Kevin Shirley and released in December 1997, debuted at Number 15 on the Australian charts. The single "Drugs" from this album peaked at Number 12 nationally. In 1998, Ammonia released their second album, Eleventh Avenue. Despite internal tensions, the band toured extensively and performed at major festivals like Big Day Out. Ammonia disbanded in late 1998 after a series of farewell gigs.
