Sylvia Brooks, born Sylvia Victoria Ippolito in Miami Beach, Florida, is a jazz vocalist and songwriter. The daughter of jazz pianist Don Ippolito and opera singer Johanna Dordick, Brooks initially pursued classical theatre, studying at The American Conservatory Theater under Allen Fletcher and Bill Ball, before transitioning to jazz. She made her debut as a jazz singer at the Jazz Bakery in Los Angeles in 2009, following collaborations with Thomas Garvin, who wrote the arrangements for her debut album Dangerous Liaisons. In 2012, Brooks released her second album, Restless, introducing "jazz noir." Her 2017 release, The Arrangement, featured original songs co-written with Christian Jacob, Patrick Williams, and Quinn Johnson, and was named one of the top 15 Jazz vocal albums by the 39th annual Jazz Radio Awards. Brooks released her fourth album, Signature, on Rhombus Records in May 2022, featuring seven original pieces with collaborators Tom Ranier, Christian Jacob, and Jeff Colella. In September 2023, she released her fifth album, her first live album, Sylvia Brooks Live with Christian Jacob, recorded at Herb Alpert's Vibrato Jazz Club in Los Angeles.
