Biography

J Hus is the stage name of Momodou Lamin Jallow, an English rapper of Gambian heritage who began as an amateur MC and made demos and videos that garnered attention on the Internet. Born on May 26, 1996, in London, he is regarded as one of the pioneers of Afroswing, a genre that blends hip-hop with Western African rhythms. He got his start by releasing a handful of well-received freestyles, later collaborating with MoStack on the 2015 single "So Paranoid." That year, he issued his breakout single "Dem Poy Paigon," which further solidified his growing reputation and earned widespread reviews. In 2017, J Hus released the mixtape The 15th Day, with the single "Lean & Bop" quickly becoming a radio hit. His studio debut, Common Sense, came out later that year and peaked at Number 6 on the UK Albums Chart. The album was nominated for a Mercury Award and won Best Album at the NME Awards, and the single "Did You See" cracked the Top 10 of the UK Singles Chart. He followed up with the EP Big Spang in May 2018. A few months later, he was arrested for carrying a knife and sentenced to eight months in prison. Shortly after being released, he returned with the single "Daily Puppy" featuring GRM Daily, which was recorded prior to his incarceration. Big Conspiracy, his sophomore effort, saw the light in 2020 and soared to the top of the UK Albums Chart, mainly thanks to the popularity of the Number 1 single "Must Be." Following a feature on Burna Boy's 2022 single "Cloak & Dagger," J Hus began teasing his third full-length album in 2023 with the singles "It's Crazy" and "Who Told You" featuring Drake. Beautiful and Brutal Yard finally arrived in July of that year, swiftly achieving pole position on the UK charts.
