Uttam Singh, born May 25, 1948, in India, is an Indian violinist and music director. At 12, his family moved to Mumbai, where he learned tabla and Western violin. In 1963, Singh's big break came when he worked as a violinist for a documentary by Mohammad Safi. He collaborated with major composers including Naushad, Roshan, Madan Mohan, C. Ramchandra, and Sachin Dev Burman, becoming the main violinist for Rahul Dev Burman. Uttam Singh worked with Jagdish and arranged music for over 65 films. In 1983, they debuted as music directors for Painter Babu. After Jagdish's death in 1992, Singh worked independently on notable soundtracks including Dil To Pagal Hai (1997), Gadar: Ek Prem Katha (2001), and Pinjar (2003). He won several awards, including the Filmfare Award for Best Music Director in 1997.
