Kenarri has been a storyteller all of her life. The format of her stories has evolved over time, but the purpose has remained the same. From the private poems of her youth, to the essays and short stories that reflected and catapulted her academic prowess, and now to her music which adds a fresh new voice to the landscape of modern messengers like Travis Scott, Gunna, Playboi Carti, and Kodie Shane; Kenarri’s stories have always served as a source of inspiration and motivation, whether for herself or for others. For her, words have always been a conduit for outward expression.
Hers is a familiar tale, yet one adorned with unique gems of internal resilience and tenacity. Growing up on the South side of Atlanta, Kenarri was faced with the reality that her parents were divorcing. In her season of uncertainty, she found solace and comfort in her own words as she discovered poetry. Her poems presented a sacred and secure place for her innermost thoughts and fears, helping her to navigate her family’s – and her own - new reality. An exemplary student who excelled academically, Kenarri also demonstrated her penchant for written communication throughout her scholastic journey, which carried her to prestigious institutions of higher learning, including Notre Dame and the University of Georgia.
Although a self-proclaimed “late bloomer” when it comes to music, Kenarri has found it to be the perfect medium through which she can marry her love for writing with a few of her other passions; affirmation, inspiration, and education. The latter doesn’t always present itself in a classroom setting, but most often does so through life experiences, and navigating life’s experiences is where Kenarri shines. Looking inward to find the tools needed to weather her own personal storms has now compelled her to reach outward to motivate others to do the same. She affirms, “We have everything we need to achieve what we want. Instead of focusing on all of the things we don’t have or can’t do, I’d rather focus on those things that we can, and that is always enough.”
“Done Up,” the new single slated for a January 2022 release, picks up where her prior EP’s, Dragon Year (2020) and The Only Way Out Is Through (2021), left off. It acknowledges the inevitable bumps in life’s road, such as breaks-ups, relationship dysfunction, sadness and depression, but rather than leaving the focus there, chooses to shine light on one’s ability to persevere and overcome. No matter where and how life finds us, the key to survival is one’s own strength.
“Done Up” is a musical glimpse into the mindset of a young girl reminding herself first, and then everyone else…
Who. She. Is.
Just as education isn’t only found in classrooms, spirituality isn’t only found in traditional religious settings. The highest form of spirituality is self-love and awareness, and Kenarri believes music is a spiritual vehicle that can be key in the transformation of one’s mind and soul, in whatever setting. We’ve all found ourselves in situations after or even during which we needed to pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, and forge ahead.
The through-line in Kenarri’s personal philosophy, and subsequently her music, is simple: “If you don’t like something, you have to get up, dig deep, and do something about it in order for it to change.” Sometimes, that “something” starts with the simple yet profound act of getting “done up” and putting your best foot forward, even if for just one step at a time until you are back in full stride.
Kenarri is a voice for a generation. This generation, while inundated with materialism and superficiality, yearns for deeper and more substantive awareness of their mental and emotional selves. “Done Up” is an anthem of affirmation. This affirmation is sure to inspire the love of self, the confidence in self, and the standard for self.
