Kate Ceberano is an Australian singer, songwriter, and actress who has made an indelible mark on the music industry. Born Catherine Yvette Ceberano on November 17, 1966, in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, Ceberano's musical journey began at a young age when she joined the band, I'm Talking in the early 1980s. The band quickly gained popularity, with Ceberano's distinctive voice becoming a defining element of their sound. Their breakthrough came with platinum album Bear Witness which showcased Ceberano's charismatic performance style and earning her the Most Popular Female Performer award at the 1986 Countdown Awards. After the band split up, Ceberano embarked on a solo career, performing on the jazz-infused soundtrack to hit ABC drama Come in Spinner in 1998, which charted at number 7 and earned her an ARIA award for Best Female Artist. Releasing her debut solo album, Brave, in 1989 which featured both chart-topping singles "Bedroom Eyes," “Young Boys Are My Weakness” as well as the title track “Brave” the singer attracted both critical acclaim and commercial success, earning her yet another ARIA for Best Female Artist as well as Highest Selling Single for “Bedroom Eyes.” Her subsequent albums Like Now, Think About It! and Blue Box charted in the top 20 however it was her acclaimed performance as Mary Magdalene in the 1992 Australian production of Jesus Christ Superstar that saw her career regain momentum with John Farnham duet “Everything’s Alright” charting at number 6 and the album itself becoming the highest selling in Australia that year, debuting at number 1 and certified 4 x platinum. Ceberano’s success continued with 1997 top 5 album Pash after the infectious pop anthem of the same name became a chart sensation. She released her first best-of album: True Romantic: The Best of Kate Ceberano in 1989, which charted for a massive 27 weeks, before embarking on several national tours, where she travelled the country with some of the music industry's biggest names. The next decade bought her minimal commercial success, however the singer made a triumphant return in 2007 with 1980s cover album Nine Lime Avenue, receiving her first top 5 charting position since Brave, with the record coming in at number 4. Releasing her 3-disc compilation Anthology in May, 2016, Ceberano continued to tour extensively, as well as being invited to perform at the closing ceremony of the 2018 Commonwealth Games. Experimenting with a variety of genres over the coming years, she collaborated on myriad jazz and indie albums, including Tryst with renowned jazz performer Paul Grabowsky, earning the singer yet another ARIA award, this time for 2019 Best Jazz Album. In May 2023 the singer performed with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra in a concert titled My Life is a Symphony, with the live album coming in at number 6.
