Marino Barreto y Rubio, known professionally as Don Marino Barreto Junior, was born on December 8, 1925, in Matanzas, Cuba. He began his music career as a contrabassist after moving to Italy in 1949. His breakthrough came with the release of "Arrivederci", which topped the Italian hit parade in 1959 and earned him a Gold Record. Other notable hits include "Telefonami", "Visino d'angelo", and "È vero". Barreto released the album Altagracia in 1960 and the single "La novia" in 1961. Despite a decline in success in the early 1960s, Barreto continued performing live until his death from cirrhosis on December 10, 1971, in Milan.
