In 2014 when he entered the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission Festival Music Competition as a solo performer playing the acoustic guitar, while he was a student at the Portmore Community College. His effort was good enough to earn him second place. Encouraged by his success, he took his career to the next level by registering his label and name. A year later he would launch out as a full-time producer.
Ojay describes his first studio experience as an interesting one actually but one that was not exciting. In fact, he spent most of his time learning about the studio equipment.
“I was young and inexperienced and trying out new instruments, computers and turning knobs. I had help and I learnt a lot from my music director from Greater Portmore High School and some of my colleagues during my time of registering my label and traveling from studio to studio in Kingston,” he revealed.
“I was always fascinated with being in the studio and watching the engineers take recordings of the artistes or musicians and I always asked what each instrument or button does, and why it makes the studio function. The majority of my time as an upcoming music producer was a learning process for me,” he said.
To date, he has collaborated with multiple artistes such as Tommy Lee Sparta, Quada Teflon, Zinc Fence, Buju Banton and many more. He has also produced on labels such as 3 Kings Music, Meltin Muzik, and Slaybad Musiq. In addition, he has also worked with Mr. Vegas, Chino McGregor, Lisa Hyper, Quada, Markus Records, King Breezy, I-Octane, Maestro Don, Savage Savo, Gold Gad, TakeOva, Bascom X, Jah Cure,Bijean Gayle, Blak Yaad Productions, Shaniel Muir, Dre King, Shabdon Records, Daneray, Popcaan and Loui V Music.
His three main projects that have been enjoying steady rotation on the airwaves are Jah Cure ft. Shaniel Muir, ‘Missing You;’ Maestro don, ‘Cyaa Dweet’; and, Quada, ‘Plead My Cause’, which can be found on many files across the internet.
Ojay said his long-term career goal is to keep making music. He is also ambitious and
hopes to grow his empire and catalogue by helping other younger musicians/artistes to become successful. He also plans to make more music with an international flavour. Apart from dancehall, he hopes to make pop, afro beats along with dancehall and reggae.
Ojay who names Davion Campbell as his greatest influence because he advised him to take his career in the music business seriously, said he his original nickname was given to him by his aunt at birth.
“She told me that she was a huge fan of OJ, the superstar NFL player. But, growing up in music I was always busy and inside my own little world. My friends always said I was always too busy and can never hang out with them. But I was always on the beat working and I never rest. Hence, the name Ojay on The Beat was the first thing came to mind. While being at a studio some local artistes asked me what s my name and I told them Ojay and few other replied saying ‘on the beat’ and we all agreed that it had a good little catch to it and so I stuck with it and went to register it.
