Schmetterlinge, an Austrian pop music group formed in Vienna in 1969, initially featured Brigitte Schuster on vocals. The band's lineup evolved over time, with notable changes including Pippa Armstrong replacing Schuster and Beatrix Neundlinger becoming the lead vocalist by 1976. Schmetterlinge released several singles in 1971 such as "Tschotscholossa" and "Frei, frei, frei wie ein Schmetterling", preceding their debut album Schmetterlinge in 1973. The group gained international recognition when they represented Austria at the Eurovision Song Contest 1977 with the satirical song "Boom Boom Boomerang", which finished in the penultimate position. Their album Herbstreise (1979) is noted for its political themes and sophisticated production. In 1985, Schmetterlinge transitioned into a theater group, performing at the Akademietheater in Vienna. The band continued to perform sporadically until 2001 and reunited briefly in 2008 without Willi Resetarits. Erich Meixner, one of the founding members, passed away in 2013.
