Biography

Elvis Martínez (January 5, 1976) is a popular Dominican singer-songwriter in the bachata genre. Also known as “El Jefe” or “El Camarón,” he had a tough childhood in his hometown of San Francisco de Macoris and had to work a series of odd jobs to help his family. In the early 90s, Elvis Martínez relocated to New York, where he learned to play the guitar under the tutelage of Aventura’s Lenny Santos. Shortly after, he was signed by the label Premium Latin Music and released his studio debut Todo Se Paga in 1998. Thanks to hits like “Así Fue” and “Me Seguirás Buscando,” the album was both a critical and commercial success, earning Martínez an ACE Award in the category of Revelation of the Year. He followed up with the full-length Directo al Corazón (1999), which proved just as popular as its predecessor, spawning the hit singles “Bailando Con Él,” “Tú Sabes Bien,” and the album’s title track. His hot streak continued with the LPs Tres Palabras (2002), Así Te Amo (2003), and Descontrolado (2004). More accolades ensued, including a Casandra Award for the song “Así Te Amo” and a nomination for the Lo Nuestro Awards in the category of Best Traditional Tropical Artist. Following his departure from Premium Latin Music, he struck a record deal with Univision Records and released the full-length Yo Soy Más Grande Que Él in 2005. One of his best-selling albums, the LP enjoyed great success in the Latin market through the singles “Tu Traición” and “Yo No Nací Para Amar.” Subsequently, Elvis Martínez issued the albums La Luz de Mis Ojos (2007), Esperanza (2012), Yo Vivo Por Tí (2019), and the compilation Mega Éxitos (2020), which featured the fan favorite “Maestra” and other hits.
