David Banks, born September 2, 1965 in Brooklyn, New York, is an American DJ, producer and author known as DJ Disciple who began his career as a gospel DJ before transitioning to house and UK garage. Banks’ first professional mix appeared at Studio 54, and his debut single "When the Music Stops" was released in 1993 on D:vision Records, gaining club traction in Italy. He followed with the "On the Dancefloor" single in 1994, which entered the UK singles chart at Number 67. Banks released full‑length albums My True Colors (2000), featuring the track "It's Easy" that reached Number 96 on the UK Singles Chart. Throughout the 1990s and 2000s he collaborated with artists such as Dawn Tallman, Robbie Rivera, and Mary J. Blige, and toured extensively in the United Kingdom, performing at venues including Ministry of Sound, Notting Hill Carnival, and the London club scene. In 2023, he co‑authored The Beat, the Scene, the Sound, a book detailing the evolution of house music in New York City, published by Rowman & Littlefield. Banks has been recognized with a Grammy nomination for his single "Caught Up" and has received community awards for his activism and educational initiatives.
