Lazar Naumovich Berman (Лазарь Наумович Берман) was a Russian classical pianist who studied with Alexander Goldenweiser at the Moscow Conservatory after moving to Moscow with his family at age nine. He gave his formal debut performing Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 25 with the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra around 1941. He later gained international recognition through performances and recordings, including his London debut in 1958 and his New York debut in 1976. He became especially associated with the music of Franz Liszt. Additionally, he recorded works by composers such as Rachmaninoff, Tchaikovsky, and Beethoven, often with leading orchestras and conductors. Berman spent his later life teaching in Italy, including at the Accademia Pianistica Internazionale in Imola and as a guest professor in Weimar. He died on February 6, 2005 in Florence, Italy.
