Cristian Mandeal, born on April 18, 1946 in Rupea, Romania, was a Romanian conductor and pianist. He studied at Liceul de Muzică in Brasov and the Academy of Music in Bucharest from 1965 to 1974, and received further training with Herbert von Karajan and Sergiu Celibidache. Mandeal's conducting career began with the Constantin Silvestri Philharmonic Orchestra of Târgu Mureș from 1977 to 1980. He then led the State Philharmonic Transilvania in Cluj-Napoca until 1987, and the Georges Enesco Philharmonic Orchestra of Bucharest from 1991 to 2010. Internationally, he directed orchestras in Spain, Israel, Italy, and Denmark. Mandeal received several awards, including the Ionel Perlea Prize and the Medal of the Romanian Academy.
