Jimmy Makulis, born Dimítrios "Dimítris" Makoúlis on 12 April 1935 in Athens, Greece, was a singer known for his career in the German-speaking countries. Growing up in South Africa, on his return to Greece, he began performing in bars and nightclubs, winning a local singing contest in 1949 that led to his first recording contract with Philips. In 1955, he moved to Germany, where he released two singles for Polydor. His breakthrough came in 1956 with the release of "Auf Cuba sind die Mädchen braun" by Heliodor. His most notable success was the 1959 hit "Gitarren klingen leise durch die Nacht", a cover of Günter Geißler's song, which became his first release for Ariola. Throughout the 1960s, he released several singles, including "Maro, Maro" (1962), "Adios, My Darling / Little Moonlight-Love" (1963), and "Mit Jedem Tag, Da Liebe Ich Dich Mehr / Träume, Die Bei Nacht Dir Begegnen" (1964). He also participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 1961, representing Austria with "Sehnsucht", which finished last. He returned to Greece in 1985 and continued recording albums into the early 2000s, including Südwind (2005) produced by Horst Lemke. Jimmy Makulis passed away on 28 October 2007, following heart surgery in Athens.
