Mahlathini and the Mahotella Queens was a South African mbaqanga supergroup formed in Johannesburg in 1964 by talent scout Rupert Bopape. The group featured Simon "Mahlathini" Nkabinde, known for his powerful vocals; the Mahotella Queens, with Hilda Tloubatla, Nobesuthu Mbadu, and Mildred Mangxola; and the Makgona Tsohle Band, led by Marks Mankwane. They began their career under Gallo Africa's Mavuthela division, releasing hit singles like "Orlando Train" and "Uyavutha Umlilo". Their debut album, Meet the Mahotella Queens, was released in 1966. The group became a major live attraction and commercial success throughout South Africa. After disbanding in 1972, they reformed in 1986–87 and gained international recognition following their performance at Nelson Mandela's 70th-birthday tribute at London's Wembley Arena in 1988. They released several albums during this period, including Thokozile and Paris - Soweto. Mahlathini passed away in 1999.
