Shirley Murdock, born Shirley Murdock on May 22, 1957, in Toledo, Ohio, is an American R&B singer-songwriter. She began her career singing gospel music in her hometown before being hired as a backing vocalist for Roger Troutman's band Zapp. Her breakthrough came with the single "Girl, Cut It Out", released under the name Roger (featuring Shirley Murdock) in 1985. In early 1986, she signed with Elektra Records and released her self-titled debut album Shirley Murdock, which included the hit single "As We Lay". This ballad peaked at Number 23 on the Billboard Hot 100 and reached the R&B Top Ten. Her subsequent albums include A Woman's Point of View (1988) and Let There Be Love! (1991). In 2002, Murdock released her debut gospel album Home, which peaked at Number 9 on Billboard’s Top Gospel Albums chart. She has also collaborated with notable artists such as Charlie Wilson on Zapp and Roger's "Computer Love" in 1986, and Teena Marie on the song "Soldier" from Marie's album Congo Square in 2009. Murdock has appeared in various stage plays and made her acting debut in the movie Sweating in the Spirit.
