Depth Charge is the main project of British DJ and producer Jonathan Saul Kane, also known as The Octagon Man, Alexander's Dark Band, The Formula and others. Born in London on January 26, 1967, Kane began mixing in 1987, simultaneously using the names Depth Charge and The Octagon Man for productions released by his labels Vinyl Solution, D.C. Recordings and Electron Industries. A pioneer of sampling, mainly using samples from kung-fu films, of which he is a great fan, he makes great use of them, which has earned him the reputation of being one of the creators of trip-hop and the big beat movement of the 1990s. A number of cult tracks, such as "Bounty Killers", "Depth Charge" and the footbalistic "Goal", were released before the Nine Dealdy Sins album (1994), followed by the EPs Legend of the Golden Snake (1995) and Disko Vixen (1997). After his fixation on electronic disco in "Disko Alien" and "Disko Airlines", he paid tribute to the Brazilian footballer in "Romário" (1998) and in 1999 released a desire-focused double album, Lust, featuring sounds from pornographic films, such as the track "Sex Sluts 'n' Heaven". The subject was explored again the same year in the follow-up Lust 2. Kane continued the Depth Charge adventure over the following decade with productions such as "The Goblin" (2000), "Hi Voltage Man" (2004) and the Mecha Squirrel EP (2009), before abandoning the pseudonym. A compilation, Spill, was released in 2002. Suffering from diabetes and multiple sclerosis, Jonathan Saul Kane died on July 12, 2024 at the age of 57. His death was announced in November 2024.
