Sean Mason is a Grammy-nominated jazz pianist, composer, and record producer, known for his innovative sound and deep roots in jazz tradition. A recipient of both a Bessie and Bistro Award, his 2023 debut album The Southern Suite (Blue Engine Records) drew critical acclaim for its emotional depth and sophistication.
Born in Charlotte, NC, Mason taught himself piano at 13, inspired by gospel and Ray Charles. In 2017, Branford Marsalis, impressed by Mason’s talent, recommended him to Juilliard, where Mason enrolled the following year. Upon moving to New York, he quickly gained recognition through his trio’s Smalls Jazz Club residency and sideman work, including contributing to the Ma Rainey's Black Bottom soundtrack.
A 2022 NPR Youngbloods artist, Mason formed the quintet featured on The Southern Suite and began touring internationally. In 2024, he co-released My Ideal with Catherine Russell (Grammy-nominated) and Chrome Valley with poet Mahogany L. Browne. Today, he tours globally as a soloist and bandleader, performing at major jazz festivals and venues.
