Biography
With his strutting, funky, summer anthem "This Girl," French DJ Kungs scored one of the big European dance hits of 2016 and was soon hanging out in Ibiza, opening for David Guetta and recording with Olly Murs. Born Valentin Brunel in Toulon on December 17, 1996, he grew up listening to classic pop and rock music but started re-mixing Bob Marley and Lana Del Rey tracks as a 16-year-old and picked his stage name after searching for translations for the word 'gentleman' and finding Kungs as the Lativian meaning for 'mister.' His version of "Are You With Me" by Belgian producer Lost Frequencies went on to notch up millions of streams on streaming services, but it was his remix "This Girl" by little known Australian soul outfit Cookin' On Three Burners that really broke Kungs as one of dance music's brightest young stars. The single reached Number 2 in the UK and filled nightclub dancefloors with infectious, soul-funk, and beachy vibes, before Kungs followed up with the track "Don't You Know" featuring gravelly-voiced British singer-songwriter Jamie N Commons. His debut album Layers (2016) was also full of trademark soulful dancefloor thumpers and featured The Kooks' frontman Luke Pritchard and pop songstress Rae Morris, and single "I Feel So Bad" went on to reach Number 3 on the French charts. After a slew of non-album singles between 2018 and 2021, Kungs finally returned in 2022 with his second full-length Club Azur, which reached Number 11 on the French Albums Chart.
