Elk City, an American art-pop band formed in 1997 as a spin-off of Melting Hopefuls, originated from New York and New Jersey. The original lineup included Renee LoBue, Ray Ketchem, and Peter Langland-Hassan. Their early career began with the release of the extended play Dreams of Steam in 1999. In 2000, they released their debut album Status, followed by Hold Tight the Ropes in 2002. After Langland-Hassan's departure, Sean Eden and Barbara Endes joined the band. They released New Believers in 2007 and House of Tongues in 2010. The band signed with Bar/None Records in 2018, released Everybody's Insecure, and the EP Souls in Space (2019). Elk City has also contributed to several tribute albums, covering songs by Pixies, Neil Young, The Cure, The Smiths, and Helix.
